URBNSURF Melbourne: A Wave Pool Drop Knee Bodyboarding Competition

Dane Pope locked in on his way to first place.

Recently, Tal Lemmens swapped the ocean for the cutting-edge URBNSURF wave pool in Melbourne to capture the thrilling DK Sessions — Australia’s premier drop knee bodyboarding competition. Held over two back-to-back sessions on the ‘Right’ and ‘Left’ waves, the event showcased the country’s top riders carving perfect artificial waves.

While the chlorinated water might seem a stark contrast to the ocean’s salt, the quality of URBNSURF’s engineered waves left nothing to be desired. The competition featured high-level riding, with an exciting format supported by Flow State’s AI technology, allowing competitors instant video replay of their rides. Each athlete then selected their best four clips for judging, adding a strategic edge to the contest.

Justin Welsh with some stylish and powerful surfing to secure third place.

After an intense and close contest — with a well-deserved break at Three Blue Ducks for food and drinks — the winners were announced:

  • Dane Pope claimed first place with a performance that energized the crowd.

  • Matt Lackey took second, impressing with style and control.

  • Justin Welsh secured third with powerful and precise riding.

  • Special mention to Darren Walton for snagging ‘Wave of the Day’.

The high caliber of riding, coupled with supportive camaraderie among competitors, created a relaxed yet electric atmosphere — one of the best vibes seen at an Australian drop knee competition.

For Tal, photographing this event was proof that whether it’s the natural ocean or a wave pool, the energy and passion of riders remain unstoppable. Tal extends his thanks to Picki for the photography opportunity, and to the dedicated behind-the-scenes crew who made DK Sessions possible.

A huge congratulations to all riders and organizers for an incredible event.

The winners: Dane Pope, taking first place with a performance that got everyone hyped; Matt Lackey, who cruised into second with some serious steeze; and Justin Welsh, who locked down third with powerful riding. And a shoutout to Darren Walton for snagging wave of the day also! Everyone was tearing the bag and it was so rad to see the high standard of drop knee in Australian competition. Not to mention everyone was fully hyping each other up which made it by far one of the most relaxed vibes at a competition.
